HUBBARD -- Hubbard High won its fourth straight Division II girls soccer district title Saturday night, defeating rival Trumbull Athletic Conference rival Champion.
The Eagles rallied for a 2-2 tie in regulation, survived a scoreless overtime and won the shoot-out 3-0.
Jami Duvall, Sarah Crafton and Christina Adams tallied in the shoot-out for the Eagles (16-3). The Flashes were high with two shots and Hubbard's Lynle Cornell stopped the other.
Hubbard will play Bay High Wednesday in a regional semifinal at Lyndhurst.
"After the regular season we worked a lot on shoot-outs," Hubbard coach Dennis Smith said.
Hubbard wound up with a 26-6 edge in shots, but Champion's Elizabeth Wood was brilliant in goal, recording 13 saves. She was coming off a 3-0 shutout over Cardinal Mooney in a district semifinal.
Newberry scores
Hubbard's Mary Newberry scored the first goal tallying unassisted from the left side from about 15 yards out with 28 minutes, 13 seconds remaining in the first half.
Champion was awarded a penalty kick at the 11:36 mark of the half when Carlie Dawson crossed the ball to fellow sophomore Jenna Lee and Lee was fouled in the penalty area. Dawson scored twice on assists from Lee in the win over Mooney.
Cornell stopped the initial penalty shot of Champion's Christa Andamasris, but the Flashes leading scorer pounced on the rebound and put it in the net.
Dawson connects
Dawson put Champion ahead 2-1 with 29:21 remaining in the game after getting a pass from Ashley Christie, then beating two defenders for a goal from 15 yards out.
Wood and the Champion defense protected the lead until Duvall chased down a throw in near the end line and centered the ball to Adams for the tying goal with 11:41 left to play.
Wood came up big on several stops down the stretch to preserve the tie. Champion had a couple chances in the first overtime and Hubbard had a shot hit the post in the second session.
