17 seniors are National Merit semifinalists



Seventeen high school seniors from schools in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys have been named semifinalists in the 48th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
The seniors are among 16,000 students nationwide to be named semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of high school seniors nationwide.
The semifinalists were chosen based on their scores on the 2001 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and now have the opportunity to compete for about 8,000 scholarships worth $30 million.
The local semifinalists are: Timothy Rupert of Niles McKinley High School, John Hay of Poland Seminary High, Philosophy Walker of Struthers High, Dana Norton of Champion High, Andrew Rostan of Boardman High, David Clayman of Liberty High, Michael Lucci and Brenda McAtee of Cardinal Mooney High and Luke Krautter and Daniel Skebo of Ursuline High.
In Pennsylvania, semifinalists are Sean Genis of Sharon High, Ryan McAndrews of the Midwest Regional Virtual Charter School, and five students from Neshannock High: Emily Daugherty, Scott Duda, Frederick Perrotta, Chad Plummer and Joseph Roberts.
