Man, 42, burned
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 42-year-old man was flown by helicopter in critical but stable condition to the burn unit at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh after he was burned over 50 percent of his body in a Friday morning fire that destroyed his Mahoning Township trailer home.
The victim, John Dean, returned to his trailer to rescue his dog after trying unsuccessfully to get a fire extinguisher from a neighbor, said Fire Chief Francis Exposito. When Dean opened his trailer door, an explosion threw him and the neighbor off the steps and inflicted severe cuts on Dean's legs. The dog already had escaped.
The neighbor, who was not injured, pulled Dean away from the trailer and covered him with blankets until emergency personnel arrived. The fire was reported at 10:05 a.m. in the Zoccoli Trailer Park off U.S. Route 422. The blaze was ruled accidental and was likely caused by an electrical short circuit in the furnace area, Exposito said. Pulaski and Union firefighters assisted.
