NICK JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP BANQUET Ursuline All Sports Hall of Fame
Fifteen former athletes and honorary contributors will be added to the Ursuline All Sports Hall of Fame at the 16th Annual Nick Johnson Scholarship Benefit Banquet to be held at Mr. Anthony's on December 3.
Steve Bialik: Named to the all-city team in 1955, this 6-foot-2, 190-pounder was one reason the path was cleared for the Irish ball carriers. "He does everything well" commented coach Tom Carey, in speaking of Bialik. As the season progressed he really ripped apart opposing lineman and thwarted advances.
Sean Durina: A three-year starter, he ran for 11 touchdowns during his career. In 1975 he scored the winning touchdown, catching a 17-yard pass from John Joyce enabling the Irish to snap Boardman's four game winning steak. In 1976 against Boardman, he snagged a 30-yard pass from Brian Halfhill that proved to be the clincher in Urusline's 20-12 victory. In 1977, he punched in the go-ahead touchdown to hang a 14-8 defeat on East Liverpool. His most memorable game was Ursuline's 14-8 win over Mooney in 1975 before 15,000 fans at South High Stadium.
Anthony LaRubbio: One of Coach Dick Angle "Seven Mules," LaRubbio anchored the offensive line as a center. He was the starting center on the first Ursuline teams to make the state playoffs in 1983 and 1984. A two-way performer, he was also a standout as a defensive tackle. The Irish were 19-3 in his two seasons as their top lineman. He garnered All-SVC, All-NEO and honorable mention all-state honors in 1984. He later played at the University of Louisville.
Ed Voytko: Voytko was an outstanding running back in 1952-53 for Ursuline; as a senior he was named to the all-city team. Also a linebacker, he scored five touchdowns and gained 597 yards in 1953. One of Voytko's most brilliant efforts came in the crucial game in the East High game.
Clinton Lynch: An All-SVC selection in 1987 and 1988, he led the conference in rushing, all purpose yardage and scoring. He totaled 1,564 al purpose yards which included scoring 13 touchdowns. Clinton lists as his most memorable feat the two touchdowns against Struthers in 1986 enabling the Irish to come away with a 7-0 victory. In 1988, he skirted for two touchdowns that clinched a 14-6 victory over Chaney. A four-year letter winner in track, Clinton ran on the state runner-up 400-meter relay as a freshman, participated in eight school record-breaking events, and earned All-SVC honors in 1986 and 1987. He played four years at the University of Illinois and was a member of the 1999 Big Ten championship team.
Caroyln Daprile Quaranta: Fired a round of 98 to lead the Ursuline girls golf team to the Ohio State Coaches Invitational Tournament championship in 1985. In 1984, the Irish girls finished second in the 18-hole invitational. Ursuline posted a 54-1 match record over a three year period. Carolyn was an integral part of this outstanding feat. The Irish were Steel Valley Champs all three years that Carolyn performed and state champs in her senior year.
Greg Morgione: While at Ursuline (1988-91), he was the No. 1 singles player all four years and was selected as the team's MVP for each of those years. During his freshman and sophomore years, he was second team All-SVC and in his junior and senior years he was selected on the first team All-SVC. He posted a 12-1 record in his senior year to help the team become co-champions of the SVC. He also won the top scholastic award. Unseeded, he went on to win the 18 and under division of the Cleveland Plain Dealer Tournament in July 1991.
Frank Czopur: Made the All-SVC team in 1998. He was an on-field leader and as a catcher excelled at stopping passed balls. He threw out one-third of runners attempting to steal second base and had a .303 batting average. Ursuline won the state championship in 1988 defeating Cincinnati McNicholas 9-5. They were the first Youngstown team ever to win a state championship.
Bill Carroll: Although picked for his basketball prowess, he could have just as easily been chosen for football or track. In his junior year as a sixth man on the Tom Carey-coached basketball team, Bill came off the bench to score six points to tie the game, and then scored 12 points in overtime to win the he game against highly favored East. During his senior year he posted a 15.7 point average. He scored 19 points against Canton South as Ursuline dedicated its new gymnasium. In football Bill started as an offensive end, but because of his showing as a dash man during track season, he was quickly converted to a tailback. He scored three touchdowns against South in a 34-20 win. In track he won three ribbons in the New Castle Invitational.
Harry Johnson: Was a three year letterman in varsity track and two year letterman in varsity basketball. In 1986, he anchored the relay team that set and broke the school record for the 4 x 100 relay six times and was the SVC 200 meter champion. and anchored the 1st place 4 x 100 relay. At the state meet he was fourth in the 200 and third in the 4x100 relay. The relay won the district meet and set a record in winning the regional. In 1987 he was team captain and most valuable runner. He won the 100 and 200 at the SVC meet, and his 200 record still stands today. District Meet, 100 meters champion,
Don Marsco: After World War II, Don obtained his teaching certification and joined the faculty at Ursuline. In addition to his teaching chores, he served as a member of the Academic Council, serving as chairperson of the Business Education and Social Study departments. His extra-curricular activities included football athletic trainer for 19 years under coaches Tom Carey and Jim Maugham, official timekeeper for the basketball games and field announcer for home football games. He coached the boys golf team to two SVC Championships and the girls golf team to a 54-1 record over three years.
Ralph and Carmen Naples, the La Famiglia Naples, Jim Devlin and Donald E. Foley will also be inducted for their support of Ursuline athletics.
