LISBON -- The Windham High volleyball team captured the Division IV district volleyball championship at Lisbon High School Thursday, eliminating Jackson-Milton 15-5, 15-2, to win the school's seventh district championship.
Windham (21-4) advanced to the Hudson regional to face the Medina district winner on Wednesday.
In game one, Windham jumped out to a 3-0 lead before a nice play by Jackson-Milton's Corey Belk helped pull her team to within two points, 3-1. One possession later, the Bluejays got to within 4-3, but that was as close as Jackson-Milton could get to the lead.
In the second contest, Jackson-Milton fell behind 1-0 before Windham's Tabitha Pennington served 10 straight points to give the Bombers an 11-0 lead. From there, Windham closed out the 15-2 lead.
"All year when we've passed well we've done OK and tonight we passed very well," said Windham coach Michael Chaffee. "I think, over the entire match, we only missed one or two serves."
The top-seeded Bombers were led by Pennington with 14 points and three aces, while Ali Roach had 11 assists, five kills, six points and five digs. Megan Biebranz had eight kills, one dig, one block, two points and one ace, while Lauren Wedger finished with six points, one ace, five assists, six kills and five digs.
"Even after we lost the first game I wasn't worried because we've come back before," said Jackson-Milton coach Sue Prozy. "But in that second game we just dug ourselves into too deep of a hole."
Jackson-Milton finished its season with a 17-9 record.
