YOUNGSTOWN -- Sponsors have announced the cancellation of a celebrity basketball game and some other events scheduled for Saturday at Youngstown State University's Beeghly Center. A dance and brunch will go forward.
The events had been slated as part of Violence Free Youngstown's start of its youth development program. The program, Keep Educating Youth All Seasons (K.E.Y.S. 4.0), seeks to encourage the city's middle school pupils to achieve a grade-point average of 2.5 or higher through high school.
The kickoff event will still feature a Red Ribbon Dance at 5 p.m. today at the Rockford Activity Centre in Rockford Village (the former Kimmel Brook Homes) on the city's East Side.
A brunch will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the center and will feature the official announcement of the Violence Free Youngstown Initiative and K.E.Y.S. 4.0.
Other events will be rescheduled for February, which is Black History Month.
