Officials plan debate
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A discussion and debate about the proposed change in the form of Lawrence County government are planned for 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Union Area High School auditorium, Camden Avenue.
Bill Flanagan, KDKA-TV reporter, will moderate. Presenters will be Elizabeth Verterano, chairwoman of the Committee to Vote Yes for Better Government, and Patrick Shea, chairman of Friends of Lawrence County, a group opposed to the change.
Voters will decide Nov. 5 if they want to change from three commissioners and various other elected offices to a part-time county council with a full-time manager. All other elected offices, except the controller and district attorney, would be replaced with department heads hired by council and the manager.
Health fair scheduled
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A Wellness World health fair will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Artman Elementary School's gymnasium, 343 N. Hermitage Road. Bonnie Sich, Artman Wellness teacher, will present healthy living patterns at the health fair with seven hands-on stations that are knowledge based and game-activity centered. Presenters also include Hermitage Police and Fire departments, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sharon Regional Health System, Olympic Fun Center and local ambulance companies. Curbside leaf program
SALEM -- The city will begin its curbside leaf pickup program Monday.
The pickup will begin in the southeast section of the city and then move to the northeast, northwest and southwest sections.
Leaves should be raked to the curb lawn. Do not bag the leaves or rake them into the street, city officials say.
Model Railroad Club
SEBRING -- The Sebring Model Railroad Club will be holding its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 16, 17, 23 and 24. The club has one of the largest and most complete model railroads in Northeast Ohio and has been in existence continuously since 1948. It's at 216 E. Pennsylvania Ave., in what was originally the Pennsylvania Railroad Sebring Freight Station.
Visitors can see and hear the steam locomotives as they thunder out of the tunnels and across the bridges. Admission is $2 for adults. Children under 12 are admitted free. Refreshments will be available.
SRU plans family day
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University will host a family day Saturday. The day opens with 10 a.m. registration in the Russell Wright Alumni House, followed by various activities in residence halls.
At 1 p.m., the SRU football team takes on Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in N. Kerr Stadium. The evening entertainment includes a 7 p.m. magic show by Mike Super in the student union multipurpose room. Admission is $1 and children 10 and younger are admitted free.
Jailed on drug charges
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Carson Osborne, 24, of East Avenue, remained in Mercer County Jail today on $100,000 bond after his arrest on charges of seven counts of delivery of controlled substances and conspiracy, and one count of possession of a controlled substance. He was arrested Saturday on a warrant filed by the Pennsylvania attorney general's office and the Mercer County Drug Task Force. Authorities said the investigation spanned two years during which time Osborne is accused of selling cocaine and marijuana. Police said they searched Osborne's car after his arrest and found other suspected controlled substances believed to be methamphetamine.
Horror film at library
WARREN -- The silent 1926 horror film "The Bells" will be screened with live musical accompaniment at 2 p.m. Sunday at the main branch of the Warren-Trumbull Public Library. The film stars Lionel Barrymore as an innkeeper who murders a wealthy traveler only to be tormented by his conscience.
