SOCCER TOURNAMENTS Howland edges Niles to advance



The Tigers' 1-0 win will send them to the district tournament.
HOWLAND -- Alissa Thomas scored the game's only goal in the first half Saturday as the fourth-seeded Howland girls soccer team eliminated Niles, 1-0.
Goalkeeper Amy Cornicelli made four saves for the Tigers 10-2-6). Niles keeper Amanda Orwig made 15 saves.
Tuesday at 7 p.m., Howland will play at North Canton Hoover or Green in a district semifinal game.
Division IIChampion 0, Ursuline 0 (Champion 3-2 shootout)
CHAMPION -- After 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, shootout goals by sophomore Jenna Lee, senior Heather Marcinko and senior Christa Andamasaris gave Champion (11-4-2) a sectional championship.
Juniors Katie Frank and Jessica Kausits made the shootout points for Ursuline which finished with a 10-7 record.
In the shootout, Wood had two saves with one Ursuline miss in five attempts and Frank had no saves with one Champion miss out of four attempted. In the district semifinal, second-seeded Champion will play host to Mooney.
Mooney 8, Salem 0
STRUTHERS -- Marisa Simon and Kelli Willis each scored two goals as Mooney blanked Salem 8-0 for a Division II section soccer title Saturday at Valley Sports.
Adrianne Detesco, Angela Duckett, Kacie Kubik and Gabrielle Fagan added a goal apiece for the Cardinals.
Amanda Stanavich, Katie Vinopal and Colleen Zajac each had an assist.
Warren JFK 5, Pymatuning Valley 0
WARREN -- Lexie Polivka scored two goals while Jenn Natale, Melissa Peterson and Katie Piacquadio netted one apiece for the Golden Eagles (9-5-4).
Lauren Natale made three assists.
Hubbard 11, Bristol 0
HUBBARD -- Senior forward Jami Duvall scored four goals and added two assists for the top-seeded Eagles (14-3).
Anna DeJulio added three goals, Amanda Fisher scored twice while Christine Adams and Amie Coonce each had a goal. Hubbard took 41 shots and Bristol was held to two.
West Branch 2, Cuyahoga Christian Academy 1
CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Tori Miller and Anina Beegle scored second-half goals as the Warriors won their second-straight sectional title and third in five years.
Niki Brown assisted on Beegle's goal as West Branch (8-7-3) advances to a district semifinal Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Chagrin Falls or Streetsboro.
