Halloween alternatives
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three area churches have announced alternative Halloween events. They include:
U Fall Harvest, a safe alternative for Halloween, at Christian Assembly from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 30. Children may dress as their favorite Bible character or come as they are. The event with games, food, candy and a bonfire is for children of all ages. Call (330) 788-0293.
U New Life Christian Fellowship in Girard will have its Annual Harvest Festival, a family event billed as a safe alternative to "Trick or Treat." Those who want to dress up are asked to wear family costumes. The fun begins Oct. 26 at from noon-2 p.m. There will be lots of candy, games and prizes, face-painting, hayrides, food and a special unicorn bouncer. The event is free. Call (330) 539-5333.
U Christian Life Center will have a Harvest Party from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 31. The church asks that costumes not be worn. There will be hayrides, games, food, live music and candy bags for children. Call (330) 533-7769.
Liturgical music
YOUNGSTOWN -- Post Vatican II Liturgical Music from 1965 to 1975 will be featured by St. Patrick Contemporary Choir at 4 p.m. Nov. 3, followed by a 5:15 p.m. Mass. Songs include those by Ray Repp, Tom Parker, Joe Wise, Sebastian Temple and The Dameans.
Life Conference set
YOUNGSTOWN -- Rising Star Baptist Church's annual Family Life Conference will have the theme, "How to Get Right Spiritually and Financially." The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Samson Murry, pastor of the Triedstone Baptist Church in Warren. Other speakers will be Kathy Thomas from State Farm Insurance, George Baker from McDonald Investments and Kent Wallace, Margaret Pannell and Mark K. Brown, all from Rising Star. The free conference will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 26.
The schedule includes: Friday: 6 p.m., opening by the Rev. Terry S. Bolds of Rising Star; 6:15 p.m., weekend overview by Brown; 6:30 p.m., "Is Your Family Going to Christ's Eternity?" by Rev. Mr. Murry; 7:30-8:15 p.m., "You Made it to Heaven but What About Those Left Behind?" by Brown; 8:15 p.m., offering; 8:30 p.m., panel discussion with questions and answers. Oct. 26: 9 a.m., overview; 9:15 a.m., "A Biblical Portrait of the Family" by Mr. Murry; 10:15 a.m., breakout sessions on communication, intimacy, finances and baggage; 11:30 a.m., closing remarks and evaluations, by Rev. Mr. Bolds.

Anniversary service
GIRARD -- Canaan Missionary Baptist Church will hold a 25th pastoral anniversary service for the Rev. Cornelius Booker Sr. at 6 p.m. Nov. 2 at Mahoning Country Club. The speaker will be Rev. Michael Harrison, pastor of Union Baptist Church in Youngstown. Call (330) 219-5218 for tickets.
Rosary devotions
AUSTINTOWN -- St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church will have Rosary devotions along with hymns and a Supplikatsia, a benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, at 7 p.m. Thursday. Refreshments will follow.
