Teachers plan vote
EAST PALESTINE -- East Palestine teachers will meet Monday after school to vote on a tentative agreement with the board of education.
Don Carson, spokesman for the 95-member teachers union, said the group met Thursday and discussed the agreement's provisions.
The union had issued a strike notice for 5 a.m. Monday if an agreement was not reached.
Representatives of the teachers union and the school board reached a tentative agreement early Wednesday after 10 hours of negotiations with a federal mediator that began at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Negotiations began May 8 and continued until impasse was declared June 20. Both parties met about six times with a mediator from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service before Tuesday's marathon session.
Hearing in child's death
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A preliminary hearing has been postponed for a man accused of inflicting injuries on an infant that reportedly caused the child's death 11 years later.
Alfred Paige, 38, was expected to appear before District Justice Melissa Amodie today. His hearing will now be at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 28.
Paige, who is in the Lawrence County Jail, is serving time in state prison on an unrelated matter. He faces one count of homicide in the death of 11-year-old Andre Tolbert of Neshannock Avenue.
Trustees set speed limit
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees have set the speed limit along Country View Circle at 25 mph. At their meeting Thursday, trustees explained that because there has been no speed limit posted along that road, the state speed limit for nonposted roads, which is 55 mph, has been the legal speed limit there.
In other business, the trustees passed a resolution in support of the renewal of the 0.5-percent sales tax in Mahoning County, which will be on the Nov. 5 general election ballot.
Bridge to be cleaned
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- The Ewing Park Bridge on Sims Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday for cleaning of the bridge deck drains. Traffic detours will be posted.
Accidental shooting
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 17-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the leg. Police Chief Victor Cubellis said the boy told police he was playing with the automatic handgun when it went off at 12:51 p.m. Thursday in his Halco Drive home.
The bullet went into the boy's left thigh and came out through his calf, Cubellis said. He was treated at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Cubellis said an investigation continues. No charges have been filed.
Facing drug charges
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested James E. Hill, 28, of Davis Street, Masury, on drug possession and other charges, saying he dropped a cloth bag containing suspected marijuana and ran from officers during an investigation of a domestic dispute on South Oakland Avenue on Wednesday.
Hill surrendered to police around 9 a.m. Thursday after learning a warrant had been issued for his arrest on charges of possession of marijuana, possession with intent to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was arraigned before District Justice James McMahon and freed on his own recognizance.
4-H Benefit Auction set
MERCER, Pa. -- The sixth annual Mercer County 4-H Benefit Auction will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the 4-H Park on U.S. Route 19, 1.5 miles north of the borough.
The list of sale items runs from restaurant gift certificates to jewelry, cheese and even a Lake Ontario fishing trip. All proceeds benefit the 4-H program and park.
Suing Detroit casino
YOUNGSTOWN -- Willie Smith Sr. of Griffin Street, Newton Falls, is suing Motor City Casino of Detroit and the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
The lawsuit, filed this week in U.S. District Court, Youngstown, says Smith was illegally detained, questioned and searched by security personnel at the casino in October 2001. He is asking for at least $200,000 in damages.
Indicted by grand jury
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted Zachary T. Howell, 25, of Lincoln Park Drive, Youngstown, and charged him with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
If convicted, Howell faces up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 fine.
