DEFINED BY THEIR CLOTHES

DEFINED BY THEIR CLOTHES
Clothes have a lot to do with popularity, many teenagers believe. In talking with different groups of teen girls, these are the definitions that emerge.
Preppies: They wear label names from the hot designers and the popular stores. Their clothes are trendy, the latest thing, and they have to fit just right. No baggy jeans for this crowd. They shop first for label, then for fit, then for price.
Punks: This crowd is into extreme sports like skateboarding, surfing and BMX riding. They like baggy pants and concert T-shirts. Their wallets are attached to their pants with chains. Like the preppies, they shop for labels.
Goths: Goths like black, and they hate labels. They sport chains, leather and dog collars.
Posers: These are wanna-bes, people who can't decide in which group they fit. One week they might show a few trendy labels, and the next week they turn up in all black. These kids haven't found their perfect style.
Jocks: The first-string player on any sports team might fit into this category. They wear the jerseys of famous sports stars with nice, preppie jeans, and choose clothes that allow them to flaunt their muscles.
Dirtballs: These teens are exactly what their name implies. "You don't want to go around them," one teen said, "because they might be dirty." Their clothes come from discount stores, which is a big fashion no-no in other groups.
The comfortable ones: No one seems to have a handy label for this group. All generally agreed that some kids just want to be comfortable. "Comfortable, but cute," as one girl puts it. "And that's what's nice about them, in a way."
