WARREN Tax amnesty program continues

WARREN -- An amnesty program for delinquent city taxpayers runs through Dec. 15.
Tom Gaffney, income tax administrator, said about 50 people have inquired about the program, which started Tuesday.
The amnesty program is to provide delinquent taxpayers with an opportunity to bring their income tax accounts up to date.
City council approved the program last month.
People who file delinquent income tax returns and pay what's due between now and Dec. 15 won't be charged penalties or interest.
Under the program, taxpayers filing delinquent returns who are unable to pay all the taxes due during the amnesty period will be able to make payments through installment plans.
Installment payments must result in full payment of taxes, interest and penalties by April 15, 2003.
Gaffney said he couldn't offer an estimate of how much may be collected through the program.
The program is being offered only this year.
"When it's over, it's over," Gaffney said. "We'll be stepping up enforcement."
