HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW Weekend football

POLAND (6-2, 2-1)vs. CANFIELD (8-0, 4-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Canfield High.
Last meeting: Last October, Poland won, 17-7, en route to clinching the Metro Athletic Conference title.
Notebook: At stake is this year's MAC title and playoff positioning. The Cardinals already have clinched a share of the title; a victory gives it to them outright. The team that does the best job containing the opposing quarterback has the best chance to succeed. For Poland, Sean Clayton's favorite target is WR David Koval, who caught five passes against Howland for 84 yards including a touchdown. Clayton has completed 107-of-158 passes for 1,422 yards. Koval leads the MAC with 47 receptions for 638 yards and nine touchdowns. TB Brandon Hardin rushed for 127 yards against Howland and leads the MAC with 842 yards. QB Leo Sorice is the piston driving the engine of the Cardinals' offense. Against Salem, Sorice completed 9-of-19 passes for 178 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 72 yards on 15 carries. Sorice has completed 45-of-81 passes for 742 yards. When Sorice isn't running the ball, look for Bill DeCola, Tim Dewberry or Tom Rogers to have their hands on it. Dewberry leads the team with 424 yards on 55 carries.

BOARDMAN (5-3, 1-1)vs. AUSTINTOWN FITCH (5-3, 1-1)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Fitch High.
Last meeting: Boardman won 30-0 last year. The Spartans have won five straight games over the Falcons.
Notebook: A must win for both teams. Fitch is ranked 10th in Division I, Region 1 computer ratings and Boardman is 11th. The winner stays alive in the Steel Valley Conference race, although Fitch would have to beat Warren Harding in Week 10 for either team to have a chance. Boardman's promising start to the season has been soured by consecutive losses to Warren Harding (in double overtime) and North Canton (on a last-second field goal). Against Hoover, quarterback Tom Zetts threw for 397 yards and two touchdowns -- both to Dan Ford, who caught four passes for 183 yards. But the Spartans' defense struggled and Boardman had to play from behind nearly the entire game. Fitch started the season 3-1, but have struggled since losing lineman Mike McGlynn to a leg injury in a Week 4 win over Canton GlenOak. The Falcons snapped a three-game losing streak with a 53-8 win over Wilson. Nine different players scored points in the win.

WARREN HARDING (8-0)vs. MASSILLON (7-1)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Mollenkopf Stadium.
Last meeting: Massillon won 54-2 in 1989.
Notebook: Two schools with a history of ill feelings between each other look to be on the road to recovery. Trouble began during the 1988 game when Massillon, then coached by Lee Owens, lost 25-22 at Mollenkopf Stadium. The Raiders scored from inside the 1-yard line on fourth down, but Massillon thought it had stripped the football before the TD. After the 1989 game, the schools didn't play again. An incident involving the basketball programs in the mid '90s didn't do anything to mend the relationship. Now, with Thom McDaniels at Harding and Rick Shepas at Massillon, the rivalry may be reborn. Harding, the top-ranked team in the Div. I poll, is second in Region 1 of the computer ratings, behind Solon. Massillon is seventh in Region 3. The Raiders are coming off a 38-7 victory over Canton McKinley. Junior RB Richard Davis ran for 150 yards and three TDs and was named the Steel Valley Conference's player of the week. Massillon scored 34 points in the first quarter of a 54-6 win over Lincoln West.
