EAST PALESTINE SCHOOLS Teachers to discuss tentative contract

The new agreement came after 10 hours of negotiations.
EAST PALESTINE -- Teachers were to meet after school today to consider a tentative agreement with the board of education.
Don Carson, spokesman for the 95-member teachers union said the group originally planned to vote on the tentative agreement today.
He said, however, the union's bylaws require members to have at least two days to consider an agreement before voting.
Carson said the teachers would discuss the contract at today's meeting and set another meeting for a ratification vote.
Representatives of the union and East Palestine school board reached a tentative agreement early Wednesday after 10 hours of negotiations with a federal mediator that began at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
School board representatives have not been available to comment Wednesday and today.
The teachers' previous contract expired June 30. The union issued a strike notice effective 5 a.m. Oct. 21 if an agreement is not reached.
Negotiations began May 8 and continued until impasse was declared June 20. Both parties met about six times with a mediator from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service before Tuesday's marathon session.
The previous session Oct. 3 lasted five hours with no agreement reached.
