Vehicle accident ties uptraffic on Route 11
VIENNA -- Traffic was backed up for more than a mile on state Route 11 after a sport utility vehicle flipped over, blocking the northbound lanes.
The driver, Christine M. Athey, 51, of West Main Street, New Waterford, was treated at a Warren hospital for minor injuries, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reports.
The accident occurred about 5 p.m. Monday, just south of state Route 82, backing up traffic almost to Tibbetts Wick Road in Liberty Township.
The patrol said Athey was northbound in a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer at about 65 mph when she tried to switch from the right to the left lane. When a vehicle behind her came into her vision, she overcorrected, causing the SUV to flip, the patrol said.
Lack of city fundingdelays annual cleanup
SALEM -- The city's annual fall cleanup will be postponed until spring because of a lack of funding, Councilwoman Nancy Cope, chairwoman of the finance committee, said. The finance committee discussed the issue Monday.
The city annually pays a company to pickup junk items residents put out to the curb on the designated day. Cope said about $15,000 is needed for the cleanup and about $14,000 is available in council's contingency fund.
Cope said the council has used much of the contingency fund for legal fees and to pay a negotiator for the police and fire department labor talks. Since both fire and police department talks continue, more money will be needed for the negotiator, she said. She added that council members like to provide the cleanup service to residents, but, "We have to use the money for the things we have to do rather than what we'd like to do."
