UNITED WAY Valley campaign hits 30% of its goal

This year's campaign, with a goal of $3.3 million, ends Nov. 30.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way 2002 campaign has surpassed the $1 million mark, 30 percent of this year's goal.
"Within the next eight weeks, our volunteers must work to raise the additional $2,291,194 necessary to reach our goal of $3.3 million," said Tom Cavalier, president and chief executive officer of Butler Wick Corp. and chairman of the 2002 Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way campaign.
"United Way-funded programs are helping to change lives in our community on a daily basis," Cavalier said. Dollars raised during the annual campaign fund 90 programs of 31 affiliated agencies, six community chests and emerging community programs. Services provided include child day care, emergency services, shelter for victims of domestic violence, supportive services for the elderly and other critical human needs.
Looking for support
"We need the support of the entire community to help us reach this goal," said Don Cagigas, president and chief executive officer of Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way. Because more than 84 percent of money raised in the annual campaign is from employee and corporate gifts, Cagigas said, "it is vital that we continue to broaden the base of corporate support and initiate new employee workplace campaigns at businesses who currently don't offer employees the opportunity to support our United Way."

The 2002 campaign runs through Nov. 30.
