NILES -- A Warren couple are in Trumbull County Jail after a convenience store robbery Friday afternoon here followed by a crash in Warren at the end of a police chase.
In the robbery at 3:07 p.m., the man walked behind the counter at the Dairy Mart, 419 S. Main St., demanding that the clerk open the cash register and give him money. Just as the couple were leaving the store in a car, the clerk triggered a robbery alarm, and a police car entered the store's parking lot and gave chase, police said.
Niles and Warren police chased the car through Niles, Weathersfield and Warren to Pine Avenue and South Street, where it crashed into a Warren police car, and the couple were arrested. There were no injuries in the robbery or the accident. No known weapon was used in the robbery, and what the robbers took from the store is still undetermined, said Niles Police Capt. Chuck Wilson.
Wilson declined to release the names of the man, 23, or his wife, 21, pending their initial appearance in Niles Municipal Court on Tuesday morning.
The man is charged with robbery, fleeing police, failure to comply with a police order, not having a driver's license, reckless operation, and failure to display license plates. His wife is charged with complicity to robbery.
