Charles Nolan, senior vice president of design for Anne Klein, has these tips for shoppers in the market for a new coat:
Closely examine the quality of the fabric. Look at how it's woven and feel the hand. "Trust your instinct on the feel. It should feel like a blanket wrapping around you."
Check out the details. Are the buttons secure? Is there a roomy enough armhole to wear a bulky sweater underneath?
Flip up the collar. A good coat collar is protective that can be turned up to keep a draft off the neck.
