VETERANS
Beirut memorial
STRUTHERS -- The Tri-State Marine Corps League will conduct a memorial service at 3 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Beirut Memorial Monument on state Route 616 to commemorate the death of 241 servicemen killed in the Marine barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1983. The victims included Cpl. Edward Johnston of Struthers and 13 other Ohio Marines. The public is invited.
Veterans Day Assembly
BRISTOLVILLE -- Bristol Middle School and High School will present its 24th annual Veterans Day Assembly at 9 a.m. Nov. 8 to recognize the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces.
Special honorees will be VFW Post 7200 and its Ladies Auxiliary, the Women's Relief Corps, Grand Army of the Republic Hall Corps 104 and members of the 910th Air Lift Wing. Speakers will be Maj. Robert Sines, who served three tours in Vietnam, and Sgt. Robert H. Brothers, who fought in 10 major battles in the Korean War. The Bristol Middle School and High School choirs will perform patriotic music.

Marine Corps: Reserve Pvt. Ryan J. Beil (Liberty High School. '02), son of Colleen C. and Joseph T. Beil of Youngstown.
PROMOTIONS
Lance corporal
Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Brett P. Simon, son of Susan L. and Lee T. Simon of Salem, was promoted to his current rank while serving with Marine Tactical Air Command Squadron 28, Cherry Point, N.C. He is 2000 graduate of Salem High School.
Medical commander
Ohio Army National Guard Capt. Phillip J. Boes of Boardman was named commander of C Co. (medical), 227th Forward Support Battalion in Columbus. Co. C is the direct support medical unit under the 28th Infantry Divisional Support Command.
Boes has served in the National Guard for 14 years and most recently was the intelligence, plans and operations officer on the battalion staff of the 237th Forward Support Battalion in Springfield. Boes works and lives in Boardman with his wife, Amy, and daughter, Brittany.
