KEYSTONE CLIPS Veteran license plates available for motorcycles

Armed forces veterans in Pennsylvania have had a variety of "veteran" vehicle license plates they could choose for their cars and light trucks, but they've never had one for their motorcycles.
The state Senate's transportation committee has approved legislation that would create a veterans license plate for motorcycles that would be available to honorably discharged veterans of the armed forces or reserves. Senate Bill 925, the enabling legislation, is awaiting a vote before the full Senate.
Deer damage
Deer have no respect for cars, not even police cars. The Southwest Mercer County Regional Police Commission was reviewing a list of bills at its meeting last week and came across a $400 repair bill for one of its cruisers.
Commission members asked what the bill was for and were told it was the result of a collision with a deer. "Did we get the deer?" quipped Mayor David George of West Middlesex, a commission member.
The commission provides police services for Farrell, Wheatland and West Middlesex.
Recycling grants
Even small communities get recognition for their recycling efforts in Pennsylvania. Wampum Borough, a small town near Ellwood City with a population of about 600 people, will get a $162 Recycling Performance Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
The amount is based on the total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for fiscal year 2000. The grant was awarded as an addition to the funds the DEP allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs.
