FARRELL, PA. County agency on aging wants to sell former center

FARRELL, Pa.-- Mercer County Area Agency on Aging Inc. wants to sell its former senior citizen multiservice center at 1020 Spearman Ave.
The agency said it will accept proposals for the purchase and development of the property, the former J.A. Farrell School, up until 11 a.m. Jan. 16.
The agency doesn't need the site anymore.
It operated the facility from 1979 until it launched a proposed $3 million project in 1999 to gut and remodel the building and expand facilities there.
The agency put the project out for bids and got the interior of the building gutted but couldn't muster enough funds to do the remodeling and addition.
In the end, a decision was made to move the center from Farrell to 220 N. Buhl Farm Drive in Hermitage in a $2.9 million project, financed in large part by a $2.4 million loan backed by the county.
The agency had hoped Mercer County Housing Authority would want the Spearman Avenue building for conversion into apartments, but that hasn't happened.
The agency now wants to hear from prospective developers who have a plan for the structure.
