TAC Liberty stops Tigers in 2nd OT



Hubbard and Girard won to set up their key showdown next week.
YOUNGSTOWN -- In the second overtime, the Liberty High football team made its conversion kick, and Newton Falls failed as Liberty prevailed 23-22 Friday in the Trumbull Athletic Conference.
Bradley Fletcher ran 14 times for 124 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown for the Leopards (5-3, 3-2).
Steve Patterson added 15 carries for 103 yards for Liberty.
The game was tied at 16 after regulation and also after the first extra session.
In the second overtime, Mike Marvin scored from the 7 and the placement made it 23-16.
Matt Gillespie, who ran 28 times for 163 yards and a 4-yard score in the second period for the Tigers (5-3, 2-3), pulled in a 6-yard scoring aerial from Tom Nemet to narrow the gap to 23-22.
The conversion kick failed.
Nemet hit on 12-of-23 passes for 65 yards and he ran 18 times for 66 yards and a 10-yard tally.
Hubbard 35, Champion 14
CHAMPION -- Gabe McKee ran for touchdowns of 2 and 7 yards and passed 49 yards to David Phillips for another tally as Hubbard beat Champion for its eighth straight win and fifth in the TAC.
Junior fullback Chris Buccilli ran 4 yards for a touchdown and kicked four PATs for the Eagles, who had 277 yards rushing and 108 in the air for 385 total.
Shaun Lane ran 26 yards for Hubbard's first touchdown and finished with 194 yards on 22 carries.
McKee was six of 11 passing for the 108. He also threw a conversion pass to Jacoby Morris.
Phillips ended the night with two catches for 61 yards while Adam Jablonski had a pair of snags for 31 yards.
For Champion (2-6, 0-5), Brandon Bernhard caught a 21-yard pass from Jake Gross and Steve Burkholder ran 1 yard for another TD.
Girard 27, LaBrae 0
LEAVITTSBURG -- Girard (7-1, 5-0) jumped out to a 27-0 lead and Matt Zuppo passed for 260 yards and five touchdowns as the Indians bounced LaBrae.
Three passes to Dustin Helle and one apiece to Victor Mills and Je'reil Harrison accounted for the touchdowns via the air as Zuppo completed 15 of 21.
Mark Grdinich's 21-yard run and Brandon Gardner's five PATs helped completed the Indians scoring parade.
LaBrae's (0-8, 0-5) first points were field goals of 31 and 36 yards by Mark Yartz, followed by Todd Rowan's TD passes to Dan Masterson and Brett Briscoe and a 17-yard touchdown run by Bryon Szorady.
Rowan, a sophomore, completed 15 of 32 passes for 231 yards. His top receiver was Briscoe, a senior who had five receptions for 72 yards.
Brookfield 20, Lakeview 7
BROOKFIELD -- Following Lakeview's (3-5, 2-3) first possession that culminated in a 10-yard touchdown by Josh Province at 10:19 of the first quarter, Brookfield held the Bulldogs to 112 yards and got touchdowns from Julian Hayes, Keith Haun and Lou Scudere to cruise to victory.
Hayes caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Haun in the second quarter, Haun ran 2 yards for a tally in the third quarter and Scudere galloped 41 yards in the fourth period to do the damage for the Warriors (5-3, 3-2).
Scudere, a senior running back, had 20 carries for 136 yards, while Hayes, a wide receiver, had eight receptions for 112 yards. Hayes was also productive on kickoff returns. Haun, a junior, completed 11 of 27 passes for 154 yards.
