200th anniversary
DEERFIELD -- Deerfield United Methodist Church will celebrate its 200th anniversary with services and a lunch Sunday.
Founded in 1802, a class was formed under the leadership of the Rev. Henry Shewell. Six families were in that class that became the Deerfield United Methodist Church, one of the oldest churches in the Connecticut Western Reserve of the Northwest Territory.
The congregation first met in a log cabin near the present-day Deerfield Cemetery, then in a schoolhouse. Little is known of the first two structures, but a third graced the southwest corner of the Deerfield traffic circle for many years. The present structure is north of the Deerfield circle on a triangle formed by state Routes 14 and 225.
Fellowship with refreshments will be at 9 a.m. followed by Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. Morning worship will begin at 10:45 a.m. with a guest speaker, the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Chalker of First United Methodist Church of Cleveland. He is the son of the late Rev. Wayne Chalker, who was the pastor at Deerfield in 1952 at the time of the church's 150th anniversary.
Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. for anyone who would like to attend; however, reservations are mandatory and space is limited to 200. Make reservations by contacting the church at (330) 654-2170.
Worship at 3 p.m. will include Bishop Jonathan D. Keaton; the Rev. Dr. Gary Olin, district superintendent; and several past ministers and their families. The present pastor is the Rev. Gregory Borden.
