PREP VOLLEYBALL Hunkus' 1,000th kill helps Girard post TAC victory

GIRARD -- Senior Tealle Hunkus achieved a career total of 1,000 kills, which extended her school record, as Girard High defeated LaBrae 15-3, 15-3, in a Trumbull Athletic Conference volleyball match Wednesday.
The match was stopped on Hunkus' 1,000th kill, and she was presented with a trophy and the game ball.
Girard coach Phil Walters said Hunkus is only the third girl in Ohio history to reach that mark. Hunkus finished the match with 13 kills, five points and an ace.
"Hunkus has dedicated her life to volleyball and plays it year 'round," said Walters. "During the club season, she travels an hour and a half one way just to get to practice three days a week.
"All the while she juggles school taking advance placement classes and carries a 4.1 grade point average and currently ranks eighth in her class," added Walters.
Hunkus also plays basketball and track and field, and will attend Duke University to play volleyball.
Girard seniors Stephanie Scarnecchia (five points, one ace, five kills and five digs); Janeen Delgenio ( five points and six digs), and Beth Hanna (three points, one ace and three blocks) were honored along with Hunkus on senior night.
"All four of them are returning lettermen and have made huge contributions to our team," said Walters.
Kendra Needles had four kills and four digs for LaBrae (6-15, 4-11 TAC). Maddie D'Orio had one ace.
Newton Falls 15-15, Badger 1-1
NEWTON FALLS -- Lora Mason scored seven points, with four kills for the Tigers (5-11, 4-10 TAC). Ashley Shaver and Molly Lenarcic each had four kills. Megan McElravy and Krista Maas each had two aces.
Lakeview 15-15, Champion 12-8
CHAMPION -- Megan Taylor scored 15 points and had 11 assists for the Bulldogs (17-4, 13-2 TAC). Whitney Keyser had nine kills and Michelle Antonelli had nine digs.
Kelly Meyer led Champion (8-8, 7-8) with five points, three aces and 11 assists. Velda Morrison had five points, two aces three kills.
On Tuesday, Champion defeated LaBrae 15-3, 14-16, 15-8. Michelle Canatasy paced the Golden Flashes with nine points, 15 kills and 12 digs. Jen Seifert scored 12 points.
Maddie D'Orio had eight points and seven kills for the Vikings. Amber Dietelbach added seven points, 11 assists, three blocks and two aces.
Brookfield 5-15-15, Liberty 15-1-9
LIBERTY -- Sophomore Laura Callow had four points and seven kills, junior Mary Massaro had 16 assists and sophomore Ami Markowitz had seven kills for Liberty (7-11, 4-10 TAC).
West Branch 14-15-15,Northwest 16-8-13
BELOIT -- Amy Beth Edie scored 10 points, with five kills, two blocks and a save for the Warriors (12-1), who clinched at least a tie for first place in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference title and they are 18-2 overall.
Jen Weingart had seven points, 10 kills, seven blocks, two assists and one save. Amber Metzgar had seven points, 11 assists, five kills, two blocks and a save.
Northwest slipped to 18-3, 11-2. West Branch was rated 16th in Division II of this week's volleyball poll.
Lordstown 15-15,Pymatuning Valley 10-8
LORDSTOWN -- Alycia Israel scored nine points, with four aces, 23 assists and six digs for the Red Devils (14-6). Mandy Kistler had seven kills. Kristy Israel had six kills and five digs. Julie Thompson had six points and an ace.
