COLLEGES Marhefka wins first for Rock

Ursuline High graduate Greg Foster led Wesminster in a loss to Case Western Reserve.
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Dave Freeman scored 25 points and had eight rebounds, both team highs, to lead Slippery Rock past St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) 75-66 in The Rock's season opener Monday night.
The win gave John Marhefka a successful debut as SRU's coach.
Senior guards Jeremy Cook and Aaron Epps had 11 points each for Slippery Rock, which forced St. Thomas into 22 turnovers.
St. Thomas was led by Kevin Bishop, who scored 20 points. Kahill Dawkins and Gerard Allen added 14 and 13, respectively.
Case Western Reserve 59,Westminster 56
CLEVELAND -- Greg Foster, a graduate of Ursuline High School, scored 14 points and pulled in eight rebounds for Westminster.
Justin Crum also scored 13 points for the Titans (1-2). John Link led Case (1-2) with 18 points.
Horizon League
CHICAGO -- David Bailey had 33 points as Loyola of Chicago held off a last-minute rally by Bradley for an 88-84 victory.
The Ramblers (1-1) backed Bailey with 16 points from Lewis Smith, 13 from Paul McMillan and 12 from Terence Whiters. Smith led all rebounders with 12.
James Gillingham led the Braves (1-1) with 24 points.
Big Ten
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Jitim Young scored a career high 29 points, 15 in the second half and Jason Burke added 13 points with six assists as Northwestern defeated New Hampshire 81-55.
Mid-American Conference
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands -- Bryant Matthews scored 16 points to lead Virginia Tech past Toledo 58-45 at the Paradise Jam.
Ricardo Thomas had 18 points to lead the Rockets (1-2).
Marshall 112, Kentucky St. 78
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Ronald Blackshear scored 23 points and Oklahoma State transfer David Anderson had 16 of his 19 points in the second half to lead Marshall (2-0) to a 112-78 victory over Kentucky State.
W. Michigan 70, Fordham 51
NEW YORK -- Mike Williams made 9-of-13 shots and finished with 18 points to lead Western Michigan. Robbie Collum added 17 points for the Broncos (2-1), who led 38-22 at halftime.
Women
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Geneva improved its record to 6-2 with an 80-58 win over Grove City.
Sophomore Crystal Wiley scored a career-high 25 points on 9-for-13 shooting for Geneva which made 51 percent of its shots (29-for-57).
Christy Faller led Grove City (0-3) with 16 points.
