GREENVILLE, Pa. -- On Dec. 1 the Christmas lights will go on in Greenville.
That's the evening Santa Claus and his elves will also come to town, thanks to the members of the Greenville Area Preservation Association and friends.
The group has planned several activities for the first week in December to kick off the Christmas season in style, but GAPA members don't want to take all the credit.
"It's kind of hard to say it was our organization that did it because so many people donated to get it done," said association spokeswoman Lorrie Smith.
Decorations
With refurbished Christmas wreaths to adorn the town and 20 potted evergreen trees, purchased by the association, the town will hold its first Light Up Night celebration starting at 6 p.m Dec. 1.
Santa Claus will arrive in town via firetruck with a few elves trailing along side. They will travel east on Main Street ending up in Central Parkat the corner of Main Street and Penn Avenue, according to Smith.
Members of the Greenville High School Chorale and Instrumental ensemble'swill perform in the park.
Smith said Perkin's Restaurant has donated and will pass out 100 dozen cookies and hot chocolate will also be available.
Open house
In addition to Light Up Night, GAPA members have organized a community open house scheduled for all day Dec. 6.
Smith said at least 20 downtown businesses have committed to participating in the open house as well as the Light Up Contest planned for area merchants.
Participating shops will remain open until 8 p.m. that evening and are offering refreshments, door prizes and discounts to shoppers, according to Smith.
Ballots will be available for the public to vote for the best decorated business, Smith said and the winner will be announced Dec. 16.
