NILES -- After seven seasons, two playoff appearances and two Metro Athletic Conference titles, William F. Bohren will step down as head coach for the Niles High School football team.
Bohren, 68, submitted his resignation, effective Dec. 15, to the board of education, which accepted and approved the matter at Tuesday's meeting.
The Ambridge, Pa., native had informed his team members earlier this year he planned to leave at the end of the season, saying he was no longer "having any fun and the kids are not having any fun. It's time to go."
Two straight playoff years
Under Bohren's leadership, the Red Dragons made consecutive playoff appearances in 1999 and 2000.
In 1999, Niles beat Steubenville in the regular season finale before beating Madison in the first round of the playoffs and then losing to Akron Buchtel.
In 2000, the Red Dragons went 9-1 and beat Chaney in the playoff opener in front of 15,000 fans at Stambaugh Stadium. The team beat Avon Lake in the second round before evenutally losing to Olmsted Falls, who ended up winning the state championship.
Bohren's 37-year coaching career has taken him to eight different schools, beginning in 1965 at Ohio High School in Illinois. He also coached at at Ottawa-Glandorf, Steubenville, Lakeview, Boardman, Butler (Pa.) and Salem.
Bohren has said he plans to continue coaching, just elsewhere.
Superintendent Pat Guliano said the district will need to advertise for a new head football coach.
