NHL ROUNDUP Tuesday's games

Wednesday, November 20, 2002

Thrashers 4, Panthers 3
Atlanta found a new goaltender, then rallied for an exciting win. Not a bad day for one of the worst teams in the NHL. Shawn McEachern scored a power-play goal at 3:23 of overtime Tuesday night to give Atlanta a 4-3 victory over the Florida Panthers, just hours after the Thrashers (5-11-1-1) reached a tentative agreement on a contract with free-agent goalie Byron Dafoe.
Flyers 3, Lightning 2
Simon Gagne had a goal and an assist as Philadelphia won at Tampa Bay in a matchup of early season division leaders. Jeremy Roenick and John LeClair also scored for the Atlantic Division-leading Flyers, who have lost just once in their last 11 games against Tampa Bay (8-1-2). Vincent Lecavalier and Sheldon Keefe scored for the Southeast Division-leading Lightning, who fell to 7-1-0-1 at home.
Devils 4, Sabres 3, OT
Scott Niedermayer scored 1:23 into overtime to extend Buffalo's winless streak to 12 games. Oleg Tverdovsky, John Madden and Jeff Friesen also scored for the host Devils, who overcame a 2-0 deficit. Touted prospect Ryan Miller made his NHL debut in goal for the Sabres.
Hurricanes 4, Senators 4
Bates Battaglia, Ron Francis and Rod Brind'Amour scored in the third period to give Carolina a tie with Ottawa. Marian Hossa and Radek Bonk scored late goals for the Senators, while Patrick Lalime made 37 saves. The tie gave Carolina at least one point in 11 straight games and snapped Ottawa's three-game winning streak. The Hurricanes finished their franchise-record nine-game homestand 4-0-3-2, getting 13 of a possible 18 points.
Sharks 3, Capitals 2
Evgeni Nabokov made 46 saves to preserve San Jose's victory at Washington. Teemu Selanne, Patrick Marleau and Owen Nolan scored for the Sharks, who climbed out of last place in the Pacific Division. Michael Nylander and Mike Grier scored for Washington, which had gone 129 minutes, 20 seconds without a goal.
Rangers 3, Mighty Ducks 2, OT
Pavel Bure scored 57 seconds into overtime to snap a nine-game drought and give New York a win at Madison Square Garden.
Eric Lindros added his first goal in 16 games for the Rangers, who won without coach Bryan Trottier. He missed the game because of a sore back that kept him at home. Anaheim has earned at least one point in eight straight.
Maple Leafs 2, Bruins 0
Ed Belfour made 29 saves for his second shutout since signing with Toronto, and the 60th of his career. Mikael Renberg and Paul Healey scored third-period goals for the host Maple Leafs, who ended Boston's five-game unbeaten streak. The Eastern Conference-leading Bruins have lost just three of their 18 games.
Kings 2, Wild 2
Sergei Zholtok had a goal and an assist as Minnesota tied Los Angeles. Ziggy Palffy and Alexander Frolov scored for the Kings, who improved to 2-3-1-1 on their road trip that ends Thursday in St. Louis. Dwayne Roloson made 33 saves and Marian Gaborik also scored for Minnesota, which remained unbeaten in seven overtime games (3-0-4).
Red Wings 5, Flames 0
Curtis Joseph made 29 saves for his second shutout this season as visiting Detroit won its fifth consecutive game. Kirk Maltby had a goal and two assists to lead the Red Wings' offense. The Flames have lost six straight, scoring just two goals during that stretch.
Oilers 3, Blackhawks 1
Ethan Moreau and Steve Staios scored shorthanded goals in the first period as host Edmonton snapped Chicago's six-game unbeaten streak. Sergei Berezin scored Chicago's goal in the second period, and Ryan Smyth added one for the Oilers in the third. Tommy Salo stopped 28 shots for the win.
