NEW YORK -- Mo Williams scored 25 points and No. 8 Alabama beat No. 3 Oklahoma 68-62 Thursday night in the season's first matchup of Top Ten teams.
Both schools had four starters back from teams that won their conference tournaments last season and Oklahoma was coming off an appearance in the Final Four.
It looked like the season opener for both, especially Oklahoma, which didn't get its offense going until the game's final two minutes.
Kenny Walker added 14 points for Alabama and preseason All-America Erwin Dudley had 12 points and eight rebounds. But it was Williams, a sophomore guard, who came up big when the Sooners made their late run.
Ebi Ere had 24 points for Oklahoma, while Hollis Price had all but four of his 19 in the second half.
The Crimson Tide opened the second half with a 10-0 run that gave them a 43-25 lead with 15:24 remaining. Oklahoma went 5:24 without scoring to start the half, missing six shots and committing three turnovers as they fell behind by 18 points.
Price finally started to shoot -- he was 1-for-2 in the first half -- and the Sooners were able to chip away, getting within 60-55 with 1:30 remaining on a steal and layup by Jabahri Brown.
Williams then made two free throws to restore the seven-point lead and he answered the next two times Oklahoma scored as well, never letting the Sooners closer than five points.
Memphis 70, Syracuse 63
NEW YORK -- Memphis let a 17-point lead melt away, then came back behind Anthony Rice and Jeremy Hunt to defeat Syracuse.
Syracuse freshman Carmelo Anthony scored 27 points. With him leading the way, the Orangemen took a 59-53 lead.
A 3-pointer by John Grice started the Memphis comeback. Anthony responded a basket to make it 61-56 before Memphis went on a 12-0 run fueled by Rice and Hunt to regain the lead.
Hunt finished with 19 points and Grice had 17 for the Tigers.
Syracuse managed just one basket the rest of the way and Anthony missed five late foul shots as Memphis took charge.
No. 6 Duke 102, EA Sports 74
DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke captain Chris Duhon sprained his left wrist, then coach Mike Krzyzewski hurt his leg and didn't return for the second half. Shavlik Randolph scored 18 points in 19 minutes, and Daniel Ewing added 16 points for the Blue Devils.
Duhon tumbled to the floor after being fouled with 8:05 remaining in the first half, injuring the wrist on his non-shooting hand. When he went down, Krzyzewski moved off the bench, and the coach's right hip appeared to lock up. He had the hip replaced in March, his second hip-replacement operation.
The Hall of Fame coach limped off the court and was taken to Duke Medical Center for X-rays.
