Charged in accident
YOUNGSTOWN -- John P. Klink Jr., 30, of Iowa Avenue, Girard, has been charged with driving under suspension, leaving the scene of an accident and failing to maintain an assured clear distance. An investigation revealed that Klink was involved in a crash on South Avenue on Monday and drove off. He appeared at the police department Thursday and gave a written statement, indicating that he fled the scene because he knew his license was suspended. He was released on a summons and will be in municipal court next week.
New city schools
YOUNGSTOWN -- The board of education has passed three resolutions to move forward plans for the construction of new city schools. During a special meeting Thursday, the board authorized the purchase of land for the construction of the new Williamson Elementary School. It also authorized the preparation of bid documents for technology packages at the new Harding and Taft elementary schools. The district is in the midst of a $182.5 million, six-year schools construction and renovation project.
Milton Township
LAKE MILTON -- Milton Township trustees approved a resolution that will allow the construction of a new fire station to proceed. Trustees met Thursday to discuss the project, as well as buying accident insurance for township firefighters.
The new fire station will likely be built behind town hall on Milton Avenue, said Bonnie Spencer, township clerk. A feasibility study concerning the proposed location will be done before an architectural and engineering firm is hired for the project, she said. Spencer added that officials hope to break ground for the new building by early next summer.
Jury deliberations
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jurors were to resume deliberating today in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court in the trial of two men accused in the robbery and slashing of a Youngstown woman last summer.
Jacob DiCarlo, 22, of Ayrshire Drive, and Michael Kapsouris, 25, of South Raccoon Road, are each charged with felonious assault and aggravated robbery.
Authorities say the men stole some $6,000 from a woman who was making a deposit for her employer at Key Bank on South Raccoon Road in July 2001. When she would not let go of the money, one of the robbers slashed her across her stomach.
Jurors deliberated about an hour Thursday before being sent home for the evening by Judge Robert Lisotto.
Control board action
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's control board approved these contracts and other spending items Thursday:
* Agreements with Ludt's Towing and Bob O's Towing to provide service for police tows in the city.
* A contract with Cargill Salt for road salt at $28.78 per ton. That is $9 per ton less than the city paid last year.
* A $5,000 settlement with Beverly Douglas, whose home sustained damage as a result of negligence by the water department.
Burglary charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Brandon Hosa, 18, of Coleman Street, has been charged with three counts of burglary, and bond was set in municipal court at $45,000 cash or surety.
Craig Pasquale, 18, of North Brockway Avenue, faces one count of burglary. His bond was set at $5,000, with 10 percent allowed to be paid. Both will be back in court Nov. 20 for a preliminary hearing.
The teenagers were arrested Tuesday after a burglary in the 2800 block of Bears Den Road. The homeowner reported that a purse with $250 inside was taken. Hosa, who admitted burglarizing the house, showed police where he'd hidden the money under his bed and where he'd tossed the purse in his back yard.
Since the end of October, police have been heavily patrolling the Kirk Road-Coleman Street area, where at least three burglaries took place. Two juveniles also were arrested Tuesday and taken to the county juvenile justice center. A 17-year-old Stratmore Avenue boy was charged with burglary, and a 16-year-old Como Street, Struthers, girl was charged with complicity to burglary.
