LIBERTY -- Liberty Township's first Relay for Lifestarts at 6 p.m. Friday at the high school stadium.
Co-chairmen are Carole Weimer, a teacher in the township school system, and Ron Scirocco, director of advertising for Gasser Chair Co.
Thirty-six teams of 10 to 15 people will take turns circling the stadium track during the 24-hour relay that continues until 6 p.m. Saturday.
Organizers expect to raise more than the $32,000 goal that was set for this first-year relay.
All area cancer survivors are encouraged to arrive at 5:30 to get a T-shirt and survivor sash and to participate in the open ceremonies.
Highlighting the evening will be a luminary service in honor of cancer survivors and those who lost the battle against the disease. The luminaries will burn throughout the night.
A fireworks display by the B.J. Alan Co. of Youngstown will conclude the luminary program.
Continuous family entertainment will include local bands, storytelling for children, a Ms. Relay contest, Hula Hoop contest and scavenger hunt. Each team will play host to a children's game Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
More than $664,000 has been raised at the three other Trumbull County relays in Niles, northern Trumbull County and Warren.
