NEW CASTLE Cascade will go to dogs for a day

Television personalities and area officials will judge the pet contests.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- There will be fun for Fido and his owner at the second annual "Canines in the Cascades" pet festival and dog walk.
Sponsored by Promises for Pets, a nonprofit animal welfare and education organization serving Lawrence County, the event is set for 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Cascade Park here.
A one-mile hike through Cascade Park will be featured. Participants can take a casual stroll or walk on a more challenging hike.
Walkers are encouraged to collect pledges and may participate with or without a dog.
Anyone donating $25 or more will get a free T-shirt.
There will be a prize for the most money collected.
The walk begins at 10:30 a.m. after the singing of the national anthem, a flag-raising ceremony by the Marine Corps and a blessing of the animals.
A dog trained to detect explosives will give a demonstration at 11:30 a.m., and other demonstrations of obedience, agility and grooming are planned throughout the day.
Pet contests for the waggiest tail, loudest barker, best dressed pet, fastest biscuit eater, pet that most resembles its owner and best pet tricks are planned at 12:30 p.m. There also will be a cat photo contest.
The panel of celebrity judges includes Sally Wiggin, Kelly Frey and Paul von Osdal from WTAE-TV, Channel 4, Pittsburgh; Angee Shaker and Vince Bevacqua of WYTV-TV Channel 33, Youngstown; Don Guthrie of WKBN-TV Channel 27, Youngstown; state Rep. Chris Sainato of New Castle, D-9th; New Castle Mayor Timothy Fulkerson and his wife, Teri; and Matthew Mangino, Lawrence County district attorney.
The Pittsburgh Penguin mascot Iceburgh will visit from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
There also will be a variety of animal welfare and rescue groups on hand including Going Home Greyhounds, Helping Hands Ferret Rescue and the Pittsburgh Parrot Rescue.
