MAHONING VALLEY SCRAPPERS Aviles is back; Turgeon is heading east

However, a Boston College baseball official said the school hasn't hired anyone.

NILES -- Familiar faces continue to resurface on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers coaching staff.
Willie Aviles, who served as coach during the 1999 and 2000 Pinckney-Stedler Division championship seasons, will return in the same capacity this season under manager Chris Bando, the Scrappers announced Friday.
Aviles is remembered for the emotion he showed -- on the field and in the clubhouse -- during the Scrappers' consecutive trips to the New York-Penn League championship series under Manager Ted Kubiak.
The Cleveland Indians assigned Aviles to Mahoning Valley after Dave Turgeon took an assistant coaching position with Boston College, the Scrappers said.
Aviles, who played in the New York Yankees minor league system from 1989-90, begins his fifth season as a coach in the Indians organization. He was a coach with Rookie-League Burlington last season.
Turgeon, who managed the Scrappers last season, was originally assigned as a coach on Bando's 2002 staff.
Sketchy details
The change on the Scrappers staff came with a bit of confusion.
An area television station reported Thursday that Turgeon had taken a job at Boston College.
But Josh Tenisci, the baseball contact in the sports information office at Boston College, said Friday that the Eagles baseball program had not added any new staff members.
A message left for Turgeon on his cellular telephone was not returned.
Under Turgeon, the Scrappers went 26-49 last season and finished last in the Pinckney-Stedler Division.
Turgeon, 36, was drafted by the Yankees in 1987 and played in their minor league system for four years.
His playing career took him to Holland, France, China and Mexico. He finished his career by playing in the Baltimore Orioles organization in 1998 and with a team in Mexico in '99.
Notes
Ken Rowe will return to the Scrappers as the pitching coach.
The team opens the season June 18 in Auburn, N.Y., against the Doubledays. The home opener at Cafaro Field is three days later against the Batavia Muckdogs.
