LIBERTY Annual Meyer lecture scheduled May 29
The event offers programs that seek to build bridges between the Jewish and Christian communities.
LIBERTY -- Tikva Frymer-Kensky, a nationally known professor of Hebrew Bible at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago and one of the leading Jewish theologians involved in Jewish-Christian relations, will speak at the eighth annual Rabbi Samuel Meyer Memorial Lecture.
Frymer-Kensky co-authored the landmark statement "Dabru Emet", which offered reflections on Christianity from a Jewish perspective and offered eight ways in which the two faith traditions can relate to one another.
She also co-authored a book, "Christianity in Jewish Terms" and will speak on that theme at 7:30 p.m. May 29 at Temple El Emeth, Liberty. The event is free.
Frymer-Kensky formerly served as director of Biblical studies at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia. She has also served as a visiting professor at the Hebrew Union College, Jewish Theological Seminary, and the Ben Gurion University of the Negev.
The annual event honors the memory of the late Rabbi Samuel Meyer, spiritual leader of Temple El Emeth in Liberty, who was committed to fostering a spirit of cooperation and understanding between Jews and Christians.
The Rabbi Meyer Memorial Trust joins with his widow, Fay Meyer, in honoring his memory with local programs that seek to build bridges between the Jewish and Christian communities.
The Rev. George Balasko, pastor of St. Ann Parish in East Liverpool and the creator of the program for Jewish/Christian Dialogue in the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown with Rabbi Meyer, also created the ecumenical Meyer lecture series with Rabbi Mitchell Kornspan, former rabbi of Ohev Tzedek Shaarei Torah Congregation in Boardman; Mrs. Meyer; and others.
