PREP SOFTBALL Cearfoss nearly perfect for Irish

She didn't allow a base runner until the seventh in a 13-0 tournament win over Campbell.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Maureen Cearfoss took a perfect game into the seventh inning before having it broken up.
Still, the Ursuline High softball team defeated Campbell 13-0 in the Division III tournament at Rocky Ridge.
Cearfoss was perfect through 6 1/3 innings before she hit a batter and allowed a single, but closed out the win for the Irish (7-9), who will play at Maplewood next Wednesday. Cearfoss struck out 13.
Ursuline broke the game open with an eight-run fourth inning, which was highlighted by Meghan Marenkovic's bases-loaded double.
In addition to Marenkovic's two hits, Shana Drummond and Shawn Iman each had two hits.
Girard 6, Brookfield 2: GIRARD -- Junior Beth Carney went 4-for-4, including a home run, double and three RBIs, as Girard defeated Brookfield in the Div. III sectional tournament.
Morgan Tondo had three hits and Shannon Slezyak added two for the Indians (4-20). Pitcher Nicole Melfi earned the victory as she struck out seven and walked none. Jen Ford took the loss for Brookfield.
Girard will play at Champion next Wednesday.
Regular season: BOARDMAN -- Boardman, which won the Steel Valley Conference title Tuesday, avoided a scare in a make-up game against Fitch, trailing 3-0 after two innings but winning 4-3.
Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, the Spartans (18-4, 8-0 SVC) tied the score when Meghan Hovanic hit a two-run home run. They went ahead for good in the fifth when Jaclyn Corroto scored from second on a Fitch error.
Pitcher Gina Rango came on in relief of Ashley DiDomenico and faced the minimum 15 batters in five innings to get the win.
Jennifer Purnell singled twice for Fitch (10-15, 4-4). Brianna Ozias took the loss.
Poland 10, Struthers 0: STRUTHERS -- Poland clinched the Metro Athletic Conference title as pitcher Sarah Knill one-hit Struthers.
The Bulldog offense was in high gear as it doubled four times. Katie Naumoff, Kristy Gaudiose and Steffi Graf each had two hits for Poland (15-4, 8-1).
The only hit Knill allowed was a fourth-inning single to Loriel Singer, who took the loss. Knill struck out eight and walked none.
Struthers' record is now 8-11, 4-5.
South Range 4, Lowellville 0: LOWELLVILLE -- The Raiders clinched a share of the Inter-County League title as pitcher Jenn Toth one-hit Lowellville. She struck out nine and walked one.
Crystal Schuler doubled and singled for South Range (17-5, 11-3), which can win the league outright if Springfield loses in its final ICL game.
Hubbard 3, Liberty 2: HUBBARD -- Kelly Hudy doubled home Anna DeJulio with the winning run in the fifth inning as Hubbard edged Liberty in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Colleen Sullivan doubled, singled and scored a run for the Eagles (10-5, 9-2). Pitcher Lisa Yount earned the win.
Liberty's record is now 2-14, 1-8.
