HIGH SCHOOL TRACK Trumbull County meet opens Tuesday
Nineteen schools will compete at Lakeview High School.
CORTLAND -- The 19 teams schools in the Trumbull County track and field meet Tuesday and Thursday at Lakeview High School will feature some of the area's top performers in every event.
Christen Clemson of Maplewood High, the 2001 Division III state champ in the discus, is the reigning Trumbull girls MVP for field events and she'll enter the meet with the area's top throw of 138 feet, 9 inches.
Warren Harding's boys return to defend their crown, while the McDonald girls go after their eighth straight title.
Preliminaries and semifinals in the dashes and hurdles and some field event finals are scheduled Tuesday at 4 p.m. The rest of the finals will begin Thursday at 5 p.m.
Top hurdlers entered
Anthony Smith (15.4 seconds) of Hubbard, Tony Davis (15.7) of Howland, Bill Cowie (15.8) of Newton Falls and Eric Brooks of Girard are entered in the 110- and 300-meter hurdle races.
Ryan Petrick of Champion, Kevin Stonestreet of McDonald, David Pykare of Maplewood, Mike Reese of Warren JFK and Tim Kunkel and Jason Corman of McDonald will compete in the 800 and 1600.
George Fetchko (147-6) of Howland, Don Fridley (146-1) of Niles and Steve Buckholder (138-0) of Champion will be contenders in the discus as well as the shot put.
Mike Simpson (21-23/4) of Warren Harding, Jeff Metze (19-7) of Brookfield, Greg Dominic (19-61/2) and Nathan Wilson (19-43/4) of Niles will compete in the long jump.
Jessica White will defend in the 100 (12.2) and 200 (25.6). Teammate Jasmine Smith, (12.2 and 26.2); Chachet Murray (12.3 and 26.5) of Girard; Katie Betts (26.3) of Lakeview and Emily Freudenrich (13.0) of Lordstown will challenge in the dashes.
The distance runs will feature Jen Wenhold of McDonald, Mary Sivulich of Hubbard, Marlena Wolfe of Champion, Amanda Myers of Badger and Jamie Musick of Warren JFK.
Jen Grayson (48.6) of Maplewood, Kaitlyn Nasci (48.8) of Brookfield and Molly Lenarcic (50.3) of Newton Falls should make the 300 low hurdles an interesting race.
Triple threat
Grayson will also be the athlete to beat in the long jump (16-11/2) and high jump (5-2). Tealle Hunkus (5-0) of Girard, Heather Martin (5-0) of Newton Falls and Dariana Casado (5-0) of Mineral Ridge will contend.
Tiffany Hack (38-7) of Mineral Ridge, Nyelia Paige (37-9) of Hubbard, Clemson (37-1/2) of Maplewood, Michelle Rossio (36-3) of Warren JFK and Heather Lewis of Lakeview will be among the top contenders in the shot and in the discus.
