Chaney defeated Lakeview for its sixth straight win.
TALLMADGE -- The Canfield High baseball team split two games against ranked opponents Saturday.
The Cardinals defeated Tallmadge 12-1 and lost to Cleveland St. Ignatius 3-2. Tallmadge is ranked 25th by USA Today, while St. Ignatius is fifth in the statewide Division I poll.
In Canfield's five-inning win over Tallmadge (15-3), Tom Banna had three hits, including a double, and drove in four runs.
Dave Miller added three hits, while Brent Parks and Mike Turjanica had two each. Turjanica also had two RBIs.
Pitcher Chad Baker (3-2) earned the victory. He struck out seven.
St. Ignatius (13-2) scored their runs in the first two innings and held off the Cardinals (17-5).
For Canfield, Dan Leonard and Miller each had two hits, with Miller driving in two. Dave King homered and singled for St. Ignatius, and pitcher Bob Hoyer (40) earned the victory. Kevin Prus took the loss.
Chaney 10, Lakeview 4: YOUNGSTOWN -- D.J. Fahndrich doubled twice, singled and drove in three runs for the Cowboys (13-5), who have won six in a row.
Gary Boris and Chris Hlinka each had a triple, Aaron Boris doubled, while Juan Serrano and Phil Faraglia each had two hits for Chaney. Lakeview (10-6) led 3-0 in the first inning.
Mooney 6, Ursuline 5: STRUTHERS -- Cardinal Mooney notched its second straight Steel Valley Conference win in four days.
Dan Cashon and Mark Seddon combined on the mound for Mooney. Jeff Hehr and Bill Diorio had two hits each to pace the Cardinals (5-12, 2-6). Diorio had a single, double, one RBI and scored twice. Marc Palermo had two hits for Ursuline.
On Wednesday, Mooney came from behind in the bottom of seventh inning to pin a 6-5 setback on Warren Harding.
Ed Bartolec pitched a complete game. With two outs, Diorio doubled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to plate three runs. Hehr, Cashon, Joe Burke and Dean Palombaro had hits for Mooney.
Newton Falls 8, Windham 5: WINDHAM -- Newton Falls took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed in winning for the seventh time in 18 games. Senior Scott Wilson had two hits and three RBIs at the plate and struck out six and walked three for the seven-inning victory.
In a two-run seventh, Wilson drove in Newton Falls' seventh run, followed by senior Dave Montgomery's RBI for the Tigers' eighth run. For Windham (9-6), Rick Viebranz had two hits and Zach Burns tripled. Losing pitcher Greg McDivitt registered seven strikeouts and walked two.
Mineral Ridge 9, Mathews 6: VIENNA -- Mineral Ridge (9-11, 7-4 Inter-County League) collected 14 hits, three of them singles from winning pitcher Kevin Garland (4-1), who drove in two runs and scored once.
The Mustangs had 13 hits, which included two singles from Anthony Jones, who drove in two runs and scored once.
Girard 13, Pymatuning Valley 3: GIRARD -- Matt Zuppo pitched a five-hitter, while Dustin Helle and Shawn Petraca each had two RBIs. Randy Mason also starred at the plate and had one RBI as Girard won an abbreviated game.
The Indians (15-3) scored 12 runs in the first two innings and added another run in the bottom of the fifth to win by the 10-run rule. Zuppo climbed to a 3-0 record.
Steve Ault socked a solo homer and Mike Holcomb added two singles for Pymatuning Valley (6-8).
Southeast 3, Waterloo 0: ANDOVER -- Luke Kehres (5-1) threw a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts and added two singles and all three RBIs for the Pirates (14-3, 11-1).
Warren JFK 5, Fairport Harbor 4: WARREN -- Sophomore Mike Ellis of JFK (11-5) scattered seven hits and struck out four to pick up the win. He came into the contest with a zero ERA average. Kevin Costello hit two singles, which included the game-winning RBI. Tony Campana and Orion Knepp each hit a double and single and scored once.
Losing pitcher Cody Kapostasy of Fairport Harbor (17-3) came into the game with a 0.39 ERA. Matt Vale and Rob Brent had two singles apiece.
