Giant Eagle selectedas Open qualifier
VIENNA - The Giant Eagle LPGA Classic has been selected as the U.S. qualifying site for the 2002 Weetabix Women's British Open.
Five qualifying spots will be available for the British Open, the LPGA's final major of 2002.
The qualifier will be played during the first two rounds, July 19-20, at the Avalon Lakes layout.
The British Open is August 8-11 at Turnberry Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland.

CANFIELD -- In a story in Sunday editions, Canfield High softball coach Fred Mayhew credited Elizabeth Brown with the first grand slam in school history. Several years ago, Erin Cornelius hit a grand slam for the Cardinals in a game at Niles' Waddell Park.
Mill Creekvenues are open
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Par-3 golf course, batting cages and tennis courts at the Wick Recreation Area in Mill Creek MetroParks are now open.
They will be open Sunday-Thursday until dark and Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m., weather permitting.
Grove City winsall-sports trophies
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Grove City College won the 2001-02 President's Athletic Conference All-Sports trophies for both men's and women's sports. It was the fifth straight year for the men and the seventh of the last eight for the women.
Ski Chalet team,coach honored
NILES -- The Ski Chalet Vipers race team and their coach Mike Keagy were honored recently for qualifying for the NASTAR national tournament.
The qualifiers included Courtney Keagy, who finished first in her age bracket; Lindsay Nolfi; Brigette Morvay; Shaddick Keagy; Joel Pattison; Shondell Lord; Brooke Woodard; Liz Thorndke; Tyler Davis; Doug Gault; Randy Burnett; Lyndsay Schaeffer; Kyle Hoff; Roberto Sabatini; Joseph Neuman; Mike Maiorano, and Matt Morris.
Bowlers bring homefirst-place ribbons
ASHTABULA -- Twenty members of the Mahoning County Special Olympics bowling team brought home first-place ribbons following competition during the Ashtabula Bowl-Off at St. Angelo Alleys last month.
Winners were: Tammie Klein, Kim Pallo, Terry Bacha, Younzula Harris, James Pezzone, Marie Capps, Sandra Colucci, Paul Adamovich, Floyd Jones, Coller Terrell, Tim Medved, Patrick McCarthy, George Froble, Wilbert Patterson, Laverne Kandel, Robert Nick, David Sheetz, Ron Hart, James Patterson and Gertrude Schlosser .
Other finishers were: (second place) -- David Leson, Lawrence Boros, Patsy Sorriento, Michael Klaus, Russell Bennett; (third place) -- Leonard Rankin, William Anderson; (fourth place) -- Pete Venenzuela, Andy Wittkugle, Carl Romeo, Bill Conway, Kenneth Carmichael and (fifth place) -- John Mesicko, Bryan Davis.
Mohawk's Penwellto Westminster
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Mohawk High School football standout Bill Penwell will play football at Westminster College. Penwell is a 5-foot-9, 225-pound center/defensive tackle who played for coach Lew Commesso. As a senior, Penwell had 52 tackles, including four sacks and two passes defended. The son of Frank and Bev Hammers was a three-year letterman .

Murray resigns
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Bryan Murray stepped down as coach of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to become the team's senior vice president and general manager.
He replaces Pierre Gauthier, who was fired as GM on April 19.
