The man ran out of an off-duty officer's home before he could be arrested.
CANFIELD -- Police here are looking for a Youngstown man who eluded arrest twice Tuesday.
The 26-year-old Market Street man was in a car with two Youngstown teens and a Youngstown man when it was pulled over for speeding about 12:30 a.m. on North Broad Street near East Main Street. When the car stopped, the Market Street man ran.
Police detained the driver, 21, of Dunlap Avenue, a 16-year-old Glenellen Avenue boy and a 19-year-old Steel Street man.
The driver said the Market Street man fled because he is wanted on warrants by the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department for failing to appear in court in a 1996 drug case and aggravated menacing charges.
Received call
While police were talking with the driver, the city dispatcher received a call from an off-duty officer who said a suspicious man had knocked on the door of his home, saying his car had broken down.
The man matched the description of the Market Street man.
After spending a few minutes in the off-duty officer's home, the man got nervous and ran. The off-duty officer said he grabbed and ripped the man's shirt as he ran.
Police, accompanied by dogs, state troopers and deputies, searched near Callahan Drive until about 2:15 a.m. but could not find the man.
During the traffic stop, police found suspected marijuana on Glenellen Avenue teen. He is charged with drug abuse marijuana, underage possession of tobacco and violating curfew.
Police also issued a warning to the driver for speeding.
