Basketball star to speak at Jewish event

YOUNGSTOWN -- College basketball star Tamir Goodman will be the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation at noon Sunday in the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane.
An Orthodox Jew, Goodman was a high school standout at Talmudical Academy in Baltimore, Md., and played for Towson State College in Maryland.
He was hailed by Sports Illustrated as the "Jewish Jordan."
After he speaks, he will conduct a basketball clinic for children and teens in the JJC gym.
Also after the meeting will be the "Our Sprits Soar for the State of Israel'' program, during which an Israeli-themed kite will be built and flown on the center's grounds.
Awards to be presented at the meeting include the Abe Harshman Young Leadership Award to Amy Fibus Hendricks of Liberty and the Esther Marks Memorial Volunteer Service Award to Dr. Bernard and Louise Shultz of Warren.
Also featured will be the annual endowment memorial service and a musical presentation by students from Akiva Academy and the Commission for Jewish Education.
