BOARDMAN -- Junior third baseman Andrew Good hit a home run and double, driving in five runs, as Boardman High remained unbeaten with a 7-2 victory over visiting Liberty in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday.
The Spartans (16-0) are ranked third in this week's coaches state poll.
Good average
Good, adding a single in the sixth inning and a couple of walks, went 3-for-3, shooting his average up to .463.
"I was mentally focused and very relaxed at the plate and saw the ball as well as I could," he said.
Senior Sean Curry (3-0) struck out six in six innings. Curry who became the fourth Boardman pitcher with at least three wins this season, has 20 strikeouts for the year.
"I tried to throw strikes and stay ahead of the hitters and let my defense do their job," said Curry.
That was easier said than done sometimes, as the Spartans committed three errors.
Coach Scott Knox wasn't pleased with that aspect of his team's play, nor their hitting with runners on base.
"We base everything on pitching and defense," said Knox, "and Sean Curry did a great job on the mound for us, but we have to do a better job of catching the ball and scoring when we have men on base."
Boardman left eight men on base. Leadoff hitter Mike Krieger was on base three times with a pair of walks and a single. He scored twice. Senior catcher Scott Weimer had an RBI single.
Leopards up, 1-0
Joe Lopez hit a home run to left field in the first inning, giving Liberty (4-6) a 1-0 lead. The Leopards added an unearned run in the seventh. Lopez went 2-for-4.
"It is good to play even with us being rusty because of all of our rainouts," said Leopards coach Ray Wells. "Boardman is a very good team with outstanding hitters and you can't give them 11 walks like we did and expect to win."
