Dog-laws crackdown
MERCER, Pa. -- The Shenango Valley Animal Shelter will do door-to-door checking on dog licenses and rabies vaccinations in April.
Violators of the state's dog laws face fines ranging from $65 to $300, said Ginny Steese Richardson, Mercer County treasurer. Sharon, Farrell, Hermitage, Sharpsville, West Middlesex, Wheatland and Shenango Township will be targeted, she said.
Focus of show
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Through April, "Legislative Journal" with state Rep. Chris Sainato of New Castle, D-9th, will focus on Pennsylvania's 2002-03 general fund budget. The show will detail some of Sainato's funding priorities, as well as what to expect from the final budget. The cable show airs at 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays on Adelphia Cable Channel 10.
Pitch in at park
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Celebrate Earth Week by pitching in at the park at Jennings Environmental Education Center's Spring Into Action Day on April 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interested groups and individuals are needed to help with park improvement projects during the annual event. Lunch will be provided and each participant will get a T-shirt. A raffle also will be held, featuring outdoor-related prizes.
Participants must be 12 or older and must register for the program by contacting the center at (724) 794-6011 by April 21.
Scholarships available
HARRISBURG -- Scholarships are available for students in science and technology through the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency's New Economy Technology and Science Program.
State Rep. Frank LaGrotta of Ellwood City, D-10th, said students who receive scholarships are required to work in Pennsylvania one year for each year a scholarship is received. The scholarships provide funding up to $3,000 for students enrolled in any public or private college or university science or technical program.
Eligible students must be in their sophomore year of a bachelor's degree program and must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. They also must complete an internship in the state before graduation. Scholarship applications are available through Dec. 31, but will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. For details, call (800) 692-7392.
