WARREN -- City police earlier this week warned citizens about a possible phone solicitation scam but township police say it's no scam -- it's them.
Warren police have said they've received complaints recently from a number of people who said solicitors called and went door-to-door seeking donations.
Warren police Lt. Joe Marhulik said the city's Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #34 is not asking for money, but township police say they are.
Warren Township FOP Lodge #198 is soliciting to raise money for an "Alice in Wonderland" children's play to be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 18 at Packard Music Hall.
A private company, Major Productions of Warren, is handling solicitation for the department.
Jeff Smith, the township FOP's secretary, said residents who don't feel comfortable giving money to the private company can call him at 898-5588 and leave a message if he's not there.
People from the private company will be soliciting door-to-door and by phone and can arrange to pick up donations. In some cases, notes may be left for residents who aren't home, Smith said.
Some Warren Township residents have Warren mailing addresses, which added to the confusion over solicitations, Smith said.
Others: Also helping to raise funds for the program are Western Reserve FOP Lodge #120 and Hubbard FOP Lodge #85.
Howland's FOP #163 is also involved and Smith said he's heard some people aren't donating because they think it's a scam.
A spokesperson with the Howland department said residents are always encouraged to call their local departments when asked for donations to verify its soliciting.
