Applications taken for wildlife officer school
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife will begin accepting applications April 1 for its next wildlife officer training school. Applications will be accepted through April 19 for at least 12 new wildlife officer positions.
Wildlife officer duties include: Enforcing fish and game laws, serving warrants, and conducting pollution investigations. They also conduct educational programs, advise landowners on dealing with wildlife and keep local conservation clubs updated on wildlife projects and regulations.
To be considered for the wildlife officer training school, applicants must have at least a two-year college degree in fish and wildlife management, criminal justice, environmental law enforcement, or a related field of study. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid driver's license, be able to swim 100 yards in five minutes and tread water for five minutes.
After the applications are received, candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take a civil service examination to be offered June 1 in Columbus. The top scoring candidates will then go through interviews and pre-employment evaluations. Those who are selected as cadets will attend the wildlife officer academy lasting about six months. During the school, cadets will not only attend peace officer training, but will study wildlife law enforcement, fish and wildlife management techniques and information and education skills.
Wildlife officers can be assigned to any county in the state.

BOATING
Safety check planned
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering free boat safety checks on Mosquito and Berlin reservoirs and Lake Milton in May and June.
Boaters at Mosquito can take advantage of the checks May 18, on Lake Milton on May 19 and at Berlin June 1 and 2. All checks will be operated from 11 a.m. to, 5 p.m. on their specific days.
GAME LAWS
Pa. meeting slated
The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners is scheduled to hold a meeting on April 8-9, at the agency's Harrisburg headquarters, 2001 Elmerton Ave., just off the Progress Avenue exit of Interstate 81. On April 8, the board will hear public comments on the proposed 2002-2003 hunting and furtaking seasons and bag limits that were given preliminary approval in January. Individuals may offer public comments of up to five minutes, or they may submit written comments.
Ohio law made April 10
The Ohio Wildlife Council is scheduled to vote on all proposals and regulations for 2002-2003 hunting and trapping seasons on April 10.
