Weather cancelsall sports
YOUNGSTOWN -- Poor weather conditions forced the postponement of all Youngstown State athletic activities Tuesday.
The football team called off practice, while the softball game with the University of Pittsburgh was postponed because of weather and has been rescheduled for April 3 in Pittsburgh.
The YSU home baseball game today with Niagara was postponed earlier, while Thursday's baseball game at Toledo has also been postponed and may be made up later in the season.
Berry namedby Horizon League
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State sophomore Amanda Berry has been named the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week.
Last week, Berry, who leads the Penguins with a .389 batting average, led the team to a 3-2 record at the George Mason Patriot Classic while hitting .471 with a double and two triples.
Berry turned in a 3-for-4 performance in the 4-3 win over St. Peter's that including two triples and a double and went 2-for-4 in a 2-1 win over Norfolk State.

Hoyle tourney
SHARON -- Trumbull and Mahoning county all-star basketball teams will participate in the Hoyle Tournament beginning Thursday at Sharon High School.
The Trumbull team, sponsored by Novicky Chiropractic, plays Thursday at 5 p.m. against Mercer County and 10 p.m. against Lawrence County. It then plays Friday at 9:45 p.m. against Erie County.
Bethany's Hardieis player of year
BETHANY, W.Va. -- Katie Hardie, a 5-foot-10 sophomore forward for the Bethany College women's basketball team from Cardinal Mooney High, has been named Presidents' Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
Hardie edged teammate Kelley Richardson, a 6-0 center, for the PAC's top honor, even though Hardie's scoring and rebounding averages ranked No. 2 on the team behind Richardson's.
Hardie averaged 16 points and 9.3 rebounds for all games while Richardson was at 19.2 and 10.5.
Both players made the All-PAC first team, and Hardie was selected to the All-Mid-Atlantic Region second team, and to the Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region team as an honorable mention.
Hardie led Bethany to a 22-7 record and its fourth straight PAC tourney championship. The Bison qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament for the third straight year.
Kiki Cohen, a junior guard for Bethany from Liberty High, made the All-PAC second team.
Cohen set a school record for the most 3s in one season with 62. She averaged 10.9 points, 3.1 assists and 2.6 rebounds.
Coaches hiredat Mineral Ridge
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Weathersfield school board Tuesday rehired the following sports employees for the 2002-03 school year: Lew Lowery, athletic director; Darren Garris, assistant athletic director; Joe Stevens, head varsity football coach; Shawn Brown, Tim Johnson, and Russ Hake, all assistant varsity football coaches; Andy Apisa and Andy Hake, ninth grade football coaches; Matt Blair, junior high football coach; Joe Stevens, weightlifting and fitness coach, and Ron Toth, cross country coach.
'Hawks' Shannonin all-star game
COLUMBUS -- Tim Shannon represented the Youngstown Borderhawks Youth Hockey Club at the National Hockey League's Diversity Task Force Conference and Willie O'Ree All-Star Game at Nationwide Arena.
O'Ree broke the NHL's color barrier in 1958 and currently spearheads the DTF, which tries to make ice hockey available to everyone regardless of age, skill level or economic background.
MUC's Glasswins golf tourney
ALLIANCE -- With a one-day total of 80, Mount Union's Meghann Glass of Chester, W. Va. and Oak Glen High -- the No. 1. ranked women's golfer in NCAA Division III -- won the Wilmington College Invitational recently.
Jen Maholm placed sixth with 95. Out of six teams, Mount Union (387) was runner-up to Wilmington's 381 strokes.

Agassi reachesquarterfinals
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- Andre Agassi's absence from the Australian Open this year helped Thomas Johansson win his first Grand Slam title. Johansson wasn't so lucky at the Nasdaq-100 Open.
The ninth-seeded Agassi, seeking his fifth Key Biscayne title and second in a row, beat the eighth-seeded Johansson 7-5, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals.
Agassi's opponent today will be No. 20 Nicolas Lapentti, who beat Adrian Voinea.
No. 2 Venus Williams, seeking her fourth title in the event, became the first semifinalist by rallying past No. 12 Elena Dementieva 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Two men's fourth-round matches ended with injuries on a sunny, humid, 85-degree afternoon. No. 5 Tim Henman retired because of a stiff neck, trailing No. 12 Roger Federer 6-2. Gaston Gaudio quit with severe cramping, trailing Juan Ignacio Chela 6-1, 5-7, 4-3.
