WARREN Upton group seeking members



The house is considered a National Historic Landmark.
WARREN -- The Harriet Taylor Upton Association is having its annual membership drive.
The Upton House, the third-oldest house on Mahoning Avenue, was built by Gen. Simon Perkins and finished in 1840.
It became the temporary center for the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1903 when the organization was moved to Warren by Harriet Taylor Upton.
The house was saved from demolition in 1989 and achieved National Historic Landmark status in 1993.
Restoration of the house and gardens continues today.
Numbers: The association has 24 board members and more than 265 members.
Some of its past activities include sponsoring Barbara Bush's visit to Warren to address family literacy; giving tours of the home; promoting local history and the suffrage movement; poetry readings; garden teas; garage sales; restoration and research projects; Christmas galas; and sponsorship of student essay contests.
Association members are entitled to eligibility of house rental for weddings and meetings, invitations to events and activities at the house, volunteer opportunities, program discounts and free newsletter subscription.
