Semen case delayed
WARREN -- Municipal Judge Terry Ivanchak postponed a hearing Tuesday for a man accused of splashing semen on women at local stores until a similar case against him is heard in municipal court in Girard.
Robert Leroy Gibson III, 38, of South Albright McKay Road, Brookfield, pleaded no contest March 15 in the Niles court to seven charges of criminal mischief and one charge of aggravated trespassing. He was accused of throwing semen on women at Eastwood Mall between August and November 2001.
He was sentenced to 60 days in Trumbull County Jail.
Gibson still faces charges of criminal mischief in Girard and Warren related to similar episodes at Phar-mor stores in Liberty and Howland.
Break-in, beating
WARREN -- Three men forced their way into a Logan Avenue S.E. home shortly before 3 a.m. today, brandishing a handgun at the 22-year-old resident before beating her with a pair of crutches.
While the men were searching the second floor of the house, the woman called 911.
Police chased the suspects, who were known to the victim, through back yards, catching up with them at a home on Linden S.E. Three men, all in their 30s, were arrested on charges of aggravated burglary, receiving stolen property and illegal possession of a firearm.
Girard safety blitz
GIRARD -- Reduction of speeding and an increase in seat-belt and child safety-restraint use are the goals of a citywide safety blitz today through Saturday by the police department. Capt. Michael Williams said patrols will run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily in all areas of the city.
Lifeguard class at Y
NILES -- Eastwood Family YMCA, Youngstown-Warren Road, will offer a lifeguard class April 9-23. Classes meet from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Participants must be at least 16, know all swim strokes and be able to swim 500 yards. CPR for the professional and first-aid training are required. Recertifications and crossovers from other lifeguard programs will be from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. April 30 and May 2.
Molestation sentence
WARREN -- Patricio Sanchez, 43, of Front Street, has been sentenced to 17 months in prison for fondling a 2-year-old girl in his home in September and October 2000. He also showed the girl pornography, prosecutors say. At a hearing Tuesday, Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Andrew Logan accepted guilty pleas to two counts of attempted gross sexual imposition and one count of disseminating material harmful to juveniles.
Sanchez was sentenced to 17 months on each count, with the sentences to be served at the same time.
Lordstown schools
LORDSTOWN -- The state oversight commission appointed to oversee school district finances will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday in the high school media center. The meeting had been set for earlier this week but was canceled because of bad weather.
Dog control ordinance
LAKE MILTON -- Milton Township trustees adopted a new dog control ordinance that would give police additional authority to deal with dangerous or nuisance dogs.
Also discussed at the trustees meeting Tuesday was a 2-mill police levy that will be on the May primary ballot. The additional tax would generate about $100,000, said Bonnie Spencer, township clerk.
Phone scam reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 57-year-old South Side woman reported to city police that she received two calls from a woman telling her she had "won" a credit card with a low interest rate and requesting personal information.
The caller, who telephoned from New York City around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, asked for the woman's name, Social Security number, address, birth date, income, bank account number and personal identification number. The South Side woman hung up.
