Plan adds creek access

ELKTON -- Beaver Creek State Park officials are working on a deal that will provide improved access for those who want to go paddling on the scenic Little Beaver Creek.
The park is proposing to lease about an acre owned by Elkrun Township on which to create a canoe and kayak access point, Jim Tillman, park manager, said Tuesday.
"It will provide a lot more canoeing opportunities to the public," Tillman said of the project.
The spot is along County Road 419, also known as Middle Beaver Road, about a quarter-mile east of 419's intersection with state Route 154.
The launch site borders the banks of the Middle Fork of Little Beaver Creek, which joins the main stem of the waterway several miles downstream near the state park. The park lies mostly in St. Clair Township.
Both the Middle Fork and the main creek have been designated as scenic waterways by the state and federal governments. The waters are popular with canoeists and kayakers. In 2001, nearly 3,000 boaters launched watercraft on the creek at the park.
Some paddlers float downstream to Beaver Creek's confluence with the Ohio River.
