YOUNGSTOWN Woman faces murder charge in man's death
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police say a woman who threatened her boyfriend with "marry me by Easter or else" is under arrest in his killing.
The 41-year- old Columbus woman turned herself in at the Mahoning County Justice Center within three hours of the 1 a.m. slaying today on the East Side. She faces a charge of aggravated murder.
Police reports show that Ulysses Watkins, 55, was found outside the South Truesdale Avenue home with a gunshot wound to his back.
Watkins' 26-year-old son, who lives at the address, told police he had heard his father arguing on the telephone with the woman about a half-hour before the shooting. He said she had threatened him over marrying her. The son said he heard three gunshots outside the house shortly after 1 a.m. and saw a car drive away, police reports state.
Neighbors said they had heard a man yell "no, no, no" before shots rang out and they saw a car drive off, police reports note. They then heard the man yell, "I'm shot. I'm shot."
The son told police the Columbus woman had been in town since the weekend.
Second killing: It is the second killing in the city this week. On Sunday, 31-year-old Kisha Roman of Hunter Avenue was arrested on a reckless homicide charge in the shooting death of her neighbor, Dennis Best, 49. Mahoning County Coroner Dr. David Kennedy has ruled that death a homicide.
If today's killing is ruled a homicide, it will be the city's 11th this year. By the end of March 2001, the city had recorded eight homicides.
