YOUNGSTOWN -- The driver of a van tried to lure an 11-year-old girl into the vehicle as she walked home from school on the South Side, police reports show. The girl's uncle told officers she was walking to her West Dewey Avenue home around 1:45 p.m. Friday when a man in a burgundy Ford Windstar tried to coax her to get in.
Akron woman charged
AUSTINTOWN -- Police charged an Akron woman with possession of drug paraphernalia early Sunday after they found a suspected crack pipe in her purse. The woman, 35, of West Exchange Street, Akron, also is charged with trespassing in the parking lot of the Rebel Lounge on Seventy-six Drive. She had been warned to stay away from the parking lot in the past. Police said the woman was arrested around 1:45 a.m., when they spotted her walking up to several trucks in the parking lot. The suspected crack pipe was in her purse.
Sharon girl accosted
BROOKFIELD -- A 15-year-old Sharon girl told police she was walking on Davis Street Sunday afternoon when a man in a newer black car pulled up and asked how to get to Sharon. The girl pointed east, and the man starting taking pictures of her with a digital camera. The girl then noticed the man was naked. He thanked her and drove away, turning onto Syne Street. The girl described him as a white man, in his 30s, who is either bald or has a shaved head. The rear license plate was obscured, the girl said.
'Adopt-a-tree' program
GIRARD -- In recognition of Arbor Day, on April 26, the Girard Tree Board and Recreation Department have announced an "adopt-a-tree" program. Trees may be bought in the name of the buyer, a family member or a loved one, or for a club or organization. A check for $50 can be sent to Girard Recreation Foundation at the auditor's office at City Hall, 100 W. Main St. Include a note indicating the names, phone numbers and preferred location. The first 25 trees will be shade trees planted at the Tod Park baseball fields. Other sites include city lots at North State and West Kline streets, Liberty Park, Stambaugh Park and other Tod Park sites. A plaque will be erected at each site. The tree board meets April 11 at 4 p.m. in city hall.
Audio-visual tour
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Explore Slippery Rock Creek from its headwaters to the confluence at Connoquenessing Creek through an audio-visual tour at Jennings Environmental Education Center at 2 p.m. April 7. The Slippery Rock Watershed drains an area of more than 800 square miles and spans four counties. It contains some of the most scenic and geologically interesting areas of the state, including various waterfalls and a 400-foot deep ravine.
Discussing land plan
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees, the Zoning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals will have a joint meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the township administration office, 11999 South Ave. Ext.to discuss the township's Comprehensive Land Use Plan.
Grant for organization
YOUNGSTOWN -- Meridian Services, a nonprofit organization that provides emergency shelter, transitional housing and single-room occupancy housing for homeless people, received a $40,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Development's Office of Housing and Community Partnerships. Meridian Services will use the grant to replace a steam boiler, complete asbestos abatement and reinsulate ductwork.
